Domino Magazine: Table Manners

posted on: Saturday, November 23, 2013

It was a real treat photographing for Nicole Gibbons' holiday table setting article for Domino Magazine. I've been a long-time admirer of the magazine ever since it launched during my teen years and it has certainly influenced the things I like to photograph today: decor. I am always inspired by beautiful color palettes and styling, so it was a great insight for me to see Nicole working her decorating magic one Sunday afternoon in her apartment where the shoot took place.

The feature is now live on Domino, so click here to view photos and read more about Nicole's five tips for creating an elegant (and fuss-free) holiday table setting. Stay tuned for outtakes in a later post!

Artifacts & Animals

Loving how much this red couch pops out against the dark gray walls and the random artifacts and animal decor that can be found throughout this NYC midtown apartment. Interior design by Diana Mui.

PUIG USA, INC

Earlier in the week, I photographed at PUIG USA, Inc for a window shade company that had completed installing their work over there. PUIG is a fashion and fragrance company that is based in Barcelona and I was immediately a fan after stepping into their large conference room and seeing a whole lot of white and neatly lined-up fragrances. The clean and simple look never gets old for me.

Just three simple things to beautify your living room end table: a bowl of fresh flowers, a sand hourglass, and a bell jar (my favorite!).

Hudson Allergy

Something that I love photographing and want to do more of is interiors. I made it one of my goals for the end of year and somehow magically made it happen within the last couple of weeks. I'm now collaborating with my very talented and wonderful interior designer friend Diana Mui. Here are two of my favorite rooms over at Hudson Allergy, an allergy doctor's office, that Diana designed for the past year in Tribeca. Who knew a doctor's office could be so chic and welcoming?!

I forgot how much I enjoy shooting things against a black background. Doing flower tests just because flowers are always photogenic, lovely to work with, and make my home smell great.

Salmon Trio Roll & Enoki Tempura Roll

A lot of times with sushi I'll just scarf everything down without really knowing what's inside them. I'm trying to work on knowing the ingredients better, but sushi appearances and presentation always gets to me first and I've already dived into my plate.

A new roll I tried was the Enoki Tempura Roll: mushroom, eel, shrimp and scallion served tempura style

Sushi Pizza

Sushi is absolutely one of my favorite foods and I've never really thought about photographing the bite-size pieces until now. I did a test shoot at Wasabi 34 last weekend and started with one of their appetizers called Sushi Pizza. It's basically slices of salmon, white tuna and crab meat blended with mayonnaise, diced tomatoes, and wasabi powder that is served on scallion pancakes.

Fun fact: Tiramisu literally means "pick me up" in Italian.
